Xi: stop doing multiple-choice questions, Biden: no accidental conflicts

Chinese President Xi Jinping had a telephone conversation with US President Joe Biden at an appointment on the morning of September 10, according to CCTV News.

Xi Jinping said in the phone call that China-US cooperation will benefit both countries and the world; Sino-US confrontation will bring disasters to both countries and the world. The U.S.-China relationship is not a multiple-choice question of whether to get it right, but a must-answer question of how to get it right.

According to the analysis, this is to imply that Biden is still more at the stage of thinking about the first question since he took office, and “how to get U.S.-China relationship right” is not in the scope of consideration.

Xi also said that at present, the international community is facing many common problems, China and the United States should show the big picture, shoulder great responsibilities, persist in looking forward, move forward, show strategic courage and political boldness, and push Sino-US relations as soon as possible back to the right track of stable development, to better benefit the two peoples and the people of the world.

This seems to be Xi’s suggestion that the key obstacle to the cessation of Sino-US relations is not how strong the anti-China forces in the United States are, but that the Biden administration itself does not have enough courage and boldness to resist the doubts of the opposition in the United States.

For his part, Biden continued to repeat his early strategy toward China, which was “competitive” but “non-conflicting”. He also stated that the United States has never intended to change the one-China policy, and suggested determining the focus and priority areas where the two sides can cooperate, avoiding misunderstandings, misjudgments and accidental conflicts, and pushing the U.S.-China relationship back on track.

In fact, the call was first proposed by Joe Biden, and according to a U.S. official quoted by the Washington Post, it was simply a way for Biden to “test” whether the summit exchange would be more effective.
