The J-35 Industrial Bet: China’s Medium Stealth Fighter Moves From Prototype to Production Logic

Shenyang / South China Sea — The J-35 family is no longer just another stealth-fighter prototype story. By late 2025 and through 2026, open-source reporting has shown three things happening at once: a land-based J-35A entering People’s Liberation Army Air Force service, a naval J-35 completing electromagnetic catapult launch and recovery aboard the carrier Fujian, and an industrial push to turn the aircraft into China’s mass-production medium stealth fighter. That combination is why the J-35 now sits at the centre of most open-source debate about Chinese fighter production.

This article does not treat the J-35 as a finished peer-competitor scorecard against the F-35. The more useful question for industrial observers is different: what kind of production system is China building around a medium stealth fighter, and how far has that system actually moved from prototype to scalable output?

1. Why the J-35 Matters Industrially

China already has a heavy stealth fighter in series production: the Chengdu J-20. The industrial logic of the J-35 is complementary, not duplicative. A heavy air-superiority aircraft can be produced in large numbers, but it is expensive, large, and poorly suited to carrier decks. A medium twin-engine stealth design can fill three gaps at once:

That is the same industrial logic that made the F-35 important in the United States: not that it is the most exquisite fighter in every metric, but that it is the aircraft a system can afford to buy, fly, maintain and, in some cases, sell in volume. Chinese official and semi-official commentary has increasingly framed the J-35 in exactly those terms — a platform intended for scale, not a boutique demonstrator.

The programme’s lineage is also industrial rather than sudden. The aircraft grew out of Shenyang’s FC-31 / J-31 private-venture design, later militarised for the navy and then adapted for the air force as the J-35A. That path is messy, but it is familiar in Chinese aviation: a design bureau iterates in public view, the services pick what they need, and the production system is rebuilt around the selected variant.

2. What Is Publicly Confirmed in 2025–2026

Several milestones are now on the public record and do not depend on speculative leaked photographs:

What remains unconfirmed by Beijing is equally important. China has not published official fleet numbers, unit assignments, engine model designations for every batch, or a firm export customer list. Claims circulating in commercial media about “30 aircraft already built,” “57 airframes,” or future inventories of hundreds of aircraft should be treated as open-source estimates, not official tallies.

3. One Family, Two Production Problems

The J-35 is often discussed as a single fighter. Industrially it is two related problems.

The naval aircraft has to survive the most punishing operating environment in aviation: salt, shock, folding wings, twin-wheel nose gear, launch bar, tailhook, and the cycle rate of a catapult deck. Every one of those features adds weight, maintenance burden and production complexity. A carrier fighter that cannot be repaired quickly on a moving ship is not a useful industrial product, no matter how stealthy its shaping looks in a parade flypast.

The land-based J-35A can discard some of that penalty. It does not need folding wings or the same landing-gear reinforcement. That should, in theory, make it cheaper and faster to build. But the air force variant still has to share enough structure, avionics, engine interfaces and weapons bays with the naval jet to keep the supply chain from splitting into two almost separate aircraft. If commonality collapses, China loses the whole point of a family design.

This is the real industrial test of 2026–2028. Shenyang can almost certainly assemble dozens of airframes. The harder question is whether it can keep a common backbone — fuselage modules, landing-gear suppliers, mission computers, electro-optical systems, and engine dress kits — while still producing two service-specific variants at a useful rate.

4. The Factory Story Behind the Airframe

Open-source factory analysis of Chengdu has received more attention because of J-20 output. Shenyang’s role is less well mapped in public, but the pattern is familiar: a historic fighter plant that previously built J-11 and J-16 family aircraft is being asked to add a stealth airframe with tighter tolerances, more composite content and a more demanding quality system.

In other words, J-35 production is not a single factory problem. It is a three-node system: Shenyang airframes, the aero-engine complex, and the shipyard-plus-deck-operations chain that makes the naval variant worth building.

5. Fujian Changes the Demand Signal

Before Fujian, a Chinese stealth fighter for carriers was a design ambition. After electromagnetic catapult trials in 2025, it became a procurement requirement. A CATOBAR carrier can launch heavier aircraft with more fuel and weapons than a ski-jump ship. It can also sustain a higher sortie rate. That changes the industrial demand curve in two ways.

First, the navy now has a reason to order the aircraft in more than token numbers. A single experimental air wing does not justify a dedicated stealth production line; a working catapult carrier does. Second, the air force has a reason to stay inside the same family. If Shenyang is already tooling for naval jets, additional land-based airframes become a way to amortise that tooling.

That is why comparisons with the F-35C keep appearing: both are medium stealth fighters built around a carrier and a production system, not only around peak performance. China has now publicly shown a stealth jet leaving and returning to an EMALS deck. That does not mean the J-35 is operationally mature. It does mean the production case for the aircraft is stronger than it was in 2023–2024, when the jet was still widely treated as a prototype with an uncertain service future.

6. Export Is the Quiet Industrial Multiplier

The most commercially sensitive part of the J-35 story is not the carrier video. It is export.

A land-based stealth fighter priced, in unofficial reporting, around the $50 million range would sit far below typical F-35 unit prices. Even if that figure is optimistic, the industrial intent is clear: offer a fifth-generation-looking aircraft to customers that cannot buy American stealth jets, or that want a second source. Pakistan has been repeatedly mentioned in secondary reporting; Beijing has not confirmed a signed, delivered package. An export-oriented J-35AE display aircraft was reported in 2026 coverage, but a display jet is not a support system.

The export question is less about a signed contract than about whether China can support the aircraft after delivery:

If the answer to the first two questions is yes, export orders become a way to keep Shenyang’s line hot. If the answer is no, export becomes a marketing brochure that does not actually thicken the production base. That distinction matters more than any airshow nickname, including the navy jet’s reported “Blue Shark” designation.

7. How This Compares With the J-20 Production Model

Chengdu’s J-20 line is the benchmark. Open-source factory and satellite analysis has described multiple J-20 production positions and annual output estimates commonly placed around 100 aircraft a year in recent assessments. Those figures are estimates, but they establish a point: China has already shown it can serial-produce a stealth fighter in three-digit annual quantities at one plant.

The J-35 does not need to match that rate to be industrially significant. A medium fighter built at 30–60 aircraft a year, split between navy and air force, would already change the composition of PLA aviation. The more demanding test is quality at rate: delivering jets that are not merely assembled, but available for training, deck qualification and sustained flying hours.

There is a useful historical parallel inside China’s own industry. The J-10 became important not when the first prototype flew, but when engine supply, avionics and unit conversion matured enough for the aircraft to become a workhorse. The J-16 followed a similar path from upgraded Flanker derivative to high-rate multi-role fighter. The J-35 will be judged by the same standard. First-flight dates and parade appearances are the beginning of the industrial story, not the end of it.

8. The Limits of the Current Evidence

A longer analysis is only useful if it is honest about what cannot yet be said.

Those limits are not a reason to ignore the aircraft. They are a reason to watch the right indicators: new construction at Shenyang, engine-delivery language from the aero-engine group, additional hulls or deck modifications in the navy, and whether foreign customers sign support packages rather than merely pose next to a mock-up.

9. What to Watch Next

For readers following Chinese defense industry rather than day-to-day sortie news, four markers will tell the story more clearly than another leaked photograph:

  1. Repeat deck cycles on Fujian. One successful trial is a technical event. Repeated embarked periods are an industrial and training event.
  2. Air-force unit conversion. If J-35A aircraft start appearing in operational brigades rather than test establishments, the land-based line is becoming real.
  3. Engine language. Watch for official or industry comments on indigenous medium-thrust turbofan maturity, not just airframe photos.
  4. Support, not slogans, in any export deal. A real customer contract with training, spares and local maintenance is a stronger signal than a painted prototype numbered 0001.

Until those markers move, the J-35 should be understood as a programme that has crossed the prototype threshold and entered the harder phase: turning a dual-service stealth design into a production aircraft that factories, engines, carriers and maintainers can all live with.

Bottom line

The J-35 family’s significance in 2026 is industrial. China is attempting to do with a medium stealth fighter what it has already begun to do with the J-20: move a low-observable aircraft from display status into serial output. The carrier piece makes the story larger, because Fujian creates a demand signal that a land-based prototype never could. The export piece makes it commercially interesting, because a cheaper fifth-generation-class jet would extend Shenyang’s production case beyond PLA orders.

None of that requires inflated claims about the aircraft already matching the F-35 in every regime. The more durable observation is simpler. China now has two stealth-fighter industrial bets running at the same time — a heavy fighter at Chengdu and a medium fighter at Shenyang — and the second bet is no longer theoretical. How fast that second line actually yields flyable, supportable aircraft will say more about Chinese aviation industry than any single catapult video.
