Type 076 Sichuan: Why China Put an EMALS Catapult on an Amphibious Ship

Shanghai / Yellow Sea — China’s Type 076 amphibious assault ship Sichuan is being built around a problem that conventional landing helicopter docks were never designed to solve: how to launch and recover fixed-wing unmanned combat aircraft from a 40,000-ton amphibious hull. Official footage released through 2025 and 2026 has shown countermeasure launches, electromagnetic catapult hardware on a full-length flight deck, and computer-generated sequences of a GJ-21 stealth drone leaving that deck. Open-source reporting in August and early September 2026 further placed the ship in late sea trials, with accompanying discussion of GJ-21 flight activity ashore and at sea.

The industrial story is not that China invented a small aircraft carrier. It is that the same electromagnetic launch and recovery package first proven on the carrier Fujian is now being copied onto an amphibious production line. That transfer — from one unique carrier to a class that can, in principle, be built more than once — is the part worth watching.

1. What Type 076 Actually Is

Chinese authorities describe Sichuan as an amphibious assault ship with a displacement of more than 40,000 tonnes. Open-source estimates usually put full-load displacement in the 40,000–50,000-tonne range and length at roughly 250–260 meters. The ship keeps a floodable well deck, so it remains a landing platform. What separates it from the Type 075 class is the aviation deck: twin islands, a continuous flight deck, one electromagnetic catapult, and arresting gear.

That combination produces a hybrid. Type 075 ships are large helicopter carriers with a well deck. Fujian is a CATOBAR aircraft carrier built to launch manned fighters and an airborne early-warning aircraft. Type 076 sits between them. It is still an amphibious ship first. The catapult is there so that a heavier, faster unmanned aircraft can leave the deck with a useful payload, not so that the hull can replace a carrier.

Claims that the ship can already operate J-35 fighters or KJ-600 early-warning aircraft should be separated from what has been shown. Those aircraft have completed electromagnetic launch and recovery on Fujian. They have not been publicly demonstrated on Sichuan. Treating the Type 076 as a spare J-35 deck is speculation, not a completed industrial fact.

2. The GJ-21 Piece

The unmanned aircraft most closely associated with the ship is the GJ-21, a navalised development of the flying-wing GJ-11 Sharp Sword family. Official parade and promotional material in 2025 presented the type as part of the PLA inventory. Later coverage has described tailhook-equipped airframes and mock-ups on the Type 076 deck. Specialist reporting in late August 2026 linked continued flight-test activity to the ship’s trial programme.

Industrially, the GJ-21 matters because it is not a small quadcopter. A stealth combat drone with internal weapons volume, a tailhook and enough mass to justify a catapult is closer to a small naval aircraft than to a commercial UAV. That has three production consequences:

3. Why Copying Fujian’s Catapult Matters

Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System hardware is expensive and difficult. The United States spent years getting EMALS to work on a nuclear carrier. China first put a comparable system on Fujian, then put a single catapult on an amphibious hull that is tens of thousands of tonnes lighter. That is a deliberate industrial choice.

The choice only makes sense if the navy expects more than one Type 076, or at least expects the same launch gear to appear on later big-deck amphibious ships. A one-off science project would not justify redesigning the Type 075 hull form, splitting the island, and integrating arresting wires. The more plausible reading is that Chinese shipyards are treating EMALS as a modular product: first on a carrier, then on an amphibious ship, later perhaps on additional hulls.

That does not mean the two systems are identical in power, stroke or sortie rate. A single catapult on a 40,000-tonne ship will not match three catapults on an 80,000-tonne carrier. The industrial point is narrower: China is no longer treating electromagnetic launch as a unique feature of one prestige carrier.

4. Shipyard Logic, Not Just Sea-Trial Footage

Sichuan was built at Hudong-Zhonghua in Shanghai, the same yard family that produces Type 075 amphibious ships. That matters more than any single trial clip. If the first Type 076 works, the production question becomes whether Hudong can turn a modified 075 line into a repeatable 076 line without wrecking helicopter-ship output.

The useful comparison is a three-layer aviation deck structure:

Those layers only become a system if the navy can assign them different jobs. A Type 076 that tries to copy a carrier air wing will be an expensive compromise. A Type 076 that uses GJ-21 aircraft for reconnaissance, decoying, suppression and early strike — while Type 075s move Marines and Fujian carries the manned fighter wing — is a more coherent industrial design.

That is also why export analogies are weak. No other navy currently fields an amphibious ship with an electromagnetic catapult and a stealth combat drone. There is no off-the-shelf training syllabus to copy. China will have to write the operating handbook while the first hull is still being finished.

7. The Production Question That Will Matter in 2027

By the time Sichuan commissions — whether that is late 2026 or 2027 — the interesting question will no longer be whether the ship can throw a drone off the bow. It will be whether Chinese industry can support a small unmanned air wing at sea: spare airframes, navalised engines or powerplants, stealth-surface repair, deck vehicles, and a training pipeline that does not steal too many maintainers from Fujian.

That is the same support-chain test now facing the J-35, only one notch lower in glamour and one notch higher in novelty. A medium stealth fighter at least has a manned-aviation bureaucracy behind it. A catapult-launched combat drone on an amphibious ship does not. If the PLA Navy cannot staff and repair that combination, Type 076 remains a striking prototype. If it can, Hudong has a product it can build more than once.

Bottom line

Type 076 is best read as an industrial experiment in moving electromagnetic launch off the carrier and onto a hull that Chinese yards already know how to weld. The GJ-21 is the aircraft that makes that experiment worth doing. Together they create a new layer in China’s big-deck fleet, sitting between helicopter amphibious ships and the manned air wing on Fujian.

The programme will look successful in photographs long before it looks successful as a production system. The markers that matter are repeated live deck cycles, a stable unmanned maintenance chain, and evidence that the design is becoming a class rather than a single experimental ship.
