PLZ-07 self-propelled howitzers drill on Tibetan Plateau

A fire detachment of a regiment of the Xinjiang Military Region recently carried out a coordinated live firing on a snow-covered plateau at an altitude of more than 5,000 meters, according to the official WeChat account of the Xinjiang Military Region “Karakorum Guardians” on July 27. It is worth mentioning that this is the first time they have used the PLZ-07 122mm self-propelled howitzers that have entered service on the plateau for live firing.

The PLZ-07 self-propelled howitzer based on the tracked armored chassis is developed based on the PL-96 122mm howitzer. It is considered to be the best howitzer of the People’s Liberation Army that is far superior to others in terms of battlefield survivability and mobility in special areas.

Modern battlefields have increasingly higher requirements for the maneuverability of self-propelled artillery. The chassis of the PLZ-07 self-propelled howitzer is a light general-purpose chassis derived from the new generation of crawler infantry fighting vehicles. It uses a steering wheel steering control system and automatic transmission.

The report pictures show that the PLZ-07 self-propelled howitzers displayed excellent maneuverability during the assault, and it well overcame the adverse effects in high-altitude areas.

After each launch, the PLZ-07’s automatic sighting system uses the artillery follow-up system and the artillery automatic homing device to return the howitzer to the original shooting position.

Its fire control computer realizes the automatic control of the whole system: the fire control sub-system automatically receives the firing elements, firing commands and various parameters issued by the superior command system, automatically performs the aiming calculation and tilt correction, and automatically adjusts the gun to the firing position.
