Brzezinski predicted three potential alliances that could challenge U.S. hegemony:
- China-Russia-Iran Alliance
- China-Japan Alliance
- Russia-Europe Alliance
The first is most probable. Japan appears to be returning to militarism, and the U.S. has deep influence there. An alliance with Russia and Europe has already been disrupted by NATO’s eastward expansion, which not only boxed in Russia but also disrupted a potential energy partnership between Russia and Europe.
The Ukraine crisis pushed Russia closer to China. Russia, primarily an industrial nation, relies on China’s technological advancement. Iran, as a Middle Eastern powerhouse, cannot be ignored. While Iran cannot offer wealth, it can undoubtedly be a formidable adversary. The recent Israel-Palestine conflict angered the Arab world. Both Saudi Arabia and Iran warned Israel against further aggression.
China, Russia, and Iran working together against the U.S. in the Middle East? There’s no evidence yet, but each has its reasons. Russia needs relief in Ukraine, Iran aims for Islamic leadership, and China wants to alleviate tensions in the Western Pacific. However, China seems to prioritize Middle East stability and hasn’t made any notable moves.
Israel cannot afford major escalations – a barrage of missiles could easily devastate it. If the U.S. gets involved, it becomes the enemy of the Arab world. That’s why some U.S. factions oppose supporting Israel.
