In a recent interaction between China’s Coast Guard Bureau and the press, China urged the Philippines to honor past agreements and remove a stranded warship from Ren’ai Reef in the South China Sea.
The Chinese spokesperson stressed that the Philippines had promised in 1999 to remove the warship which had run aground on the reef. However, two decades later, the warship remains, and there have been recent attempts from the Philippines to conduct large-scale repairs, suggesting a move towards a more permanent occupation.
China calls for the Philippines to follow through with their past commitments and remove the warship. China claims it has allowed the Philippines to deliver essential supplies to the stranded crew from a humanitarian standpoint. However, they allege the Philippines has exploited this agreement to smuggle in building materials under the guise of delivering essential supplies.
Tensions rose on August 5th, when two Philippine vessels entered the waters of Ren’ai Reef, reportedly with the intention to deliver additional building materials to the grounded warship. The China Coast Guard intervened and used water cannons as a warning measure after verbal warnings were ignored.
China maintains a firm stance on the Ren’ai Reef issue, urging the Philippines to respect past agreements, and encourages negotiation to manage the situation at the reef. This situation highlights the ongoing territorial disputes and tension in the South China Sea.
