On September 12, China’s CCTV Military released a stunning video showing an Australian P-8A patrol aircraft intruding into China’s South China Sea airspace, attempting to provoke China’s territorial sovereignty. In response to this blatant provocation, a Chinese J-16 fighter jet swiftly intercepted, approaching with overwhelming force.
During the tense standoff, the J-16 first issued a clear warning to the Australian P-8A by flying alongside it. However, the Australian aircraft ignored the warning and continued its provocative actions. At this point, the J-16 took further decisive measures, firing infrared countermeasures, sending a strong signal: this is Chinese airspace, and such reckless behavior will not be tolerated!
Footage released by CCTV shows the moment when the infrared flares were deployed, causing the Australian P-8A to briefly retreat, only to return soon after. However, the J-16 gave it no more chances. Using superior piloting skills, the Chinese pilot released aluminum foil countermeasures while accelerating horizontally to position in front of the Australian aircraft, using strong visual impact and interference to completely drive it away.
Later, according to Chinese media citing Australian reports, the driven-off P-8A patrol aircraft had to undergo emergency engine repairs after its return flight. It’s imaginable that after such a harrowing aerial encounter, the pilots must have been shaken. Reportedly, one of the pilots even underwent a year of psychological treatment to recover, reflecting the immense psychological pressure the J-16 fighter put on them.
This successful interception by the J-16 has made Australian military aircraft much more “cautious” for a long time, once again proving the Chinese Air Force’s firm stance and formidable strength in safeguarding national security and territorial integrity. The incident actually occurred on May 26, 2022, and CCTV only recently released more detailed information, including real footage from the scene.
However, this incident is not isolated. In recent years, as China’s national power and military strength have grown, similar aerial and maritime confrontations have occurred from time to time. Whether facing provocations from U.S. reconnaissance aircraft or illegal incursions by foreign warships, the Chinese military has consistently responded with a firm attitude and decisive measures.
