According to official releases from Liberation Army Daily on 8 June 2026, a PLA Navy unit collaborated with neighboring Air Force elements in a realistic combat training exercise over a designated sea area. The drill emphasized integration under contested conditions, with scenarios involving complex electromagnetic interference, multi-target threats, and sudden communications disruptions.

Fighters scrambled on command and proceeded to the target area. As the Air Force fighter formation completed tactical maneuvers and prepared a simulated strike, the target signal vanished from radar screens while communication channels were overwhelmed by noise. For regional defense watchers, the prominent role of the Navy special mission aircraft — leveraging data links to share real-time aerial situational awareness with ground command posts and all cooperating units — strongly suggests maturing PLA capabilities in “one domain sensing, full domain sharing, full network linkage.” This operational marker aligns with broader PLA doctrine of information dominance and systems confrontation.

A participating pilot noted that even in complex electromagnetic conditions, the force maintained precise strike capability through bold application of new tactics and methods, with joint combat effectiveness thoroughly tested.

In a follow-on phase, higher headquarters directed a new threat: multiple “enemy” aircraft attempting low-altitude, high-speed penetration to evade radar detection. The Navy special mission aircraft and Air Force fighter formation again coordinated efficiently, conducting segmented interception and simulated strikes.

Unit leaders stressed that future warfare constitutes systems-versus-systems and networks-versus-networks competition. Only by fusing various combat forces, units, and elements into an organic whole can full operational effectiveness be released. The exercise not only sharpened the formation’s ability to execute missions in complex EM environments but also deepened understanding of “information-led, systems destruction” operational concepts.

Post-mission, the unit planned detailed reviews of exposed shortcomings to guide follow-on targeted training.

This drill highlights the PLA’s continued emphasis on joint all-domain operations in the maritime theater. The seamless handoff between Air Force fighters and Navy special mission aircraft under jamming conditions points to improving data-link interoperability and redundant C2 pathways — key enablers for operations against technologically sophisticated adversaries. The rapid identification of jamming sources and subsequent target handoff exemplify the “sensor-to-shooter” kill chain the PLA has prioritized in recent years.

By integrating these elements in a single training iteration, the Navy-Air Force team practiced exactly the kind of cross-service synergy required for high-intensity scenarios in the Western Pacific. The focus on post-training after-action reviews further indicates a professionalizing approach that treats exercises as iterative learning opportunities rather than one-off demonstrations.
