Ten Y-20Bs in an Elephant Walk: China’s Strategic Airlift Comes of Age — Almost

Air Force Sector – Chinese state military media recently put a spotlight on the PLA Air Force’s Y-20B heavy transport aircraft, including footage showing at least ten Y-20Bs performing an “elephant walk” together — the term for a large formation of aircraft taxiing in close succession. It is the largest concentration of the type observed publicly to date, and the number itself is a signal: it shows that the re-engined Y-20B has moved from scattered appearances into large-scale fielding.

The Y-20B first appeared in public at the September 2025 parade, then mixed in with earlier Y-20A aircraft, with only the lead few carrying the new engines. Seeing at least ten at once means the new powerplant has entered fielding at scale. And to understand why that matters, you have to start with the engine — it is the real story of this aircraft.

The real milestone: breaking the dependence on Russian engines

Since the Y-20 entered service in 2016, it was held back by one bottleneck: the engine. The early Y-20A used the Russian D-30KP-2 turbofan — a 1960s-era design that China also struggled to obtain in reliable numbers. Having the “heart” of a strategic airlifter depend on imports had been a years-long sore point for China’s aviation industry.

The Y-20B’s core upgrade is its full switch to the indigenous WS-20 high-bypass turbofan. Western analysts read the significance the same way China does: it lets China’s strategic airlift stand on domestic power for the first time. The WS-20’s higher bypass ratio and greater thrust bring lower fuel consumption, longer range, and higher payload. In other words, what is most valuable about the Y-20B is not that it is new but that it is self-reliant — a long-standing chokepoint has been cleared. It is why some Western analysts call the Y-20, despite drawing far less attention than the J-20 stealth fighter, one of the most strategically significant military aircraft programs China has undertaken in recent years.

As for the WS-20 using narrow-chord metal blades rather than lighter wide-chord composite ones, that is a trade-off between performance and reliability, not a sign of technical shortfall. Composite blades are lighter but more easily damaged on sand-and-gravel field runways and harder to repair — and an airlifter routinely operates from rough strips. In fact, the US Air Force’s C-17 uses the F117 engine with metal blades too; on this point, China’s choice aligns with mature Western design.

Placing the Y-20 in the evolution of China’s transport fleet

To see where the Y-20B fits, look at how China’s transport fleet has evolved over decades. In the 1990s, the PLAAF relied on a tiered system of Y-5, Y-7, Y-8, and a handful of Il-76s, with the Y-8C as the mainstay — the Il-76 performed best but came in numbers too small to matter. In the 2000s, the Il-76 fleet grew and the Y-8 platform spawned newer types like the Y-9. The Y-20’s 2016 entry into service marked China’s large transports going truly indigenous — even if, at first, it still shared the heavy-airlift load with the Il-76.

China’s air force is now in a transition phase: Y-20 alongside Il-76, heavy alongside medium transports — but the Y-20 and Y-9 share is rising fast while the Il-76 and Y-8C fade. Western assessments echo the trend: China is expected to retire all 27 of its Il-76s by around 2032, with one major benefit being an end to reliance on Russian spare parts and technical support.

Measuring against the US: closing in, but one piece short

Setting the Y-20 fleet against the US picture shows both how far it has come and what it still lacks.

At the operational tier, the Y-20 is matched against the US C-17 Globemaster III. The two share a similar airframe philosophy, but a real gap remains: even with the WS-20, the Y-20’s maximum payload in open-source figures (around 66 tons) still trails the C-17 (around 77 tons), and how far the re-engined Y-20B narrows that gap is not yet clear. At the tactical tier, the Y-9 is matched against the US C-130J Super Hercules. China has, in effect, built out a fairly complete system spanning heavy, medium, light, and special-mission transports.

But the most important piece is still missing. To build a truly complete strategic airlift capability, China still lacks a super-heavy transport on the scale of the US C-5M Galaxy — the “last piece of the puzzle” its transport arm has yet to add. This is worth emphasizing precisely because it comes from Chinese analysts’ own judgment, a rare and clear-eyed admission of a gap. There are signs China is developing a larger transport, but it has not yet materialized.

What it adds up to

The ten-aircraft elephant walk marks not a single piece of hardware but a system reaching a point of maturity. The switch to the indigenous WS-20, the fielding at scale, the build-out of a tiered fleet from tactical to operational — all are real progress, and the weightiest part is that China’s strategic airlift now rests, for the first time, on a foundation of domestic power.

But “mature” is not the same as “complete.” The Y-20 answers the question of whether China has a reliable heavy airlifter; the question of whether it has top-tier super-heavy strategic airlift is still that unplaced piece of the puzzle. The most accurate reading: China has built a usable and increasingly self-reliant strategic airlift force that is closing in on the targets it measures itself against — without having fully arrived.
