Northern training area — On 16 September 2026, CCTV News broadcast live-fire footage of the Type 99B main battle tank: crews handling rounds inside the turret, tanks firing from the halt and on the move, including shots to the side and rear. A crew order in the clip called for an armor-piercing round at 1,200 meters. The tank had first appeared in public at the 3 September 2025 Victory Day parade. The new tape is the first official look at it in a unit training cycle rather than on a parade avenue.

That gap — twelve months from parade to brigade range — is the industrial story. A new turret on a review stand is a prototype decision. A three-man crew loading, laying and firing under a camera is a production-and-training decision.

1. What the Footage Shows, Mechanically

The Type 99 family is a three-crew tank with a 125 mm smoothbore gun and an autoloader under the turret floor. The loader’s job is not to ram each round by hand. The autoloader presents a selected cartridge from the carousel; the gunner and commander work the sights and the fire-control computer; the driver keeps the hull in the ordered firing geometry.

In the September clip that sequence is visible in pieces: ammunition prepared outside the vehicle, a round handled in the fighting compartment, the sight picture, then the gun firing. A 1,200-meter armor-piercing shot from a standing tank is a basic gunnery serial, not a new munition. What is new on camera is that the same vehicle then fires while moving and off the bow — the fire-control system has to keep the barrel on the aim point while the hull yaws and the suspension works. That is the difference between a parade tank and a tank that can fight on the move.

Open commentary after the broadcast treated side and rear shots as evidence the 99B can accept fire missions that are not neatly in front of the glacis. That is a training claim. It is not a published armor diagram.

2. What Changed from the Type 99A — and What Did Not

The 99A, in service since the early 2010s, already had a 1,500-horsepower diesel, a welded turret and a digital fire-control set. The 99B keeps the same gun caliber and the same three-man layout. Norinco did not replace the Type 99 with a clean-sheet heavy tank. The 99B keeps the 125 mm gun and three-man crew and rebuilds the current heavy chassis. A separate new family — the Type 100 tank and its fire-support vehicle — appeared on the same parade, but that is a parallel line, not the 99B.

Chinese specialists quoted after the CCTV tape put the main gain in the information system: the tank is meant to take a target or a movement order from the brigade network and execute it faster than a 99A crew working mostly from its own sights. That is why the parade vehicle showed extra electro-optical housings and a different reactive-armor layout. Hard-kill active protection — intercepting an incoming missile or drone before it hits the turret roof — has been widely attributed to the 99B in specialist reporting, often under the GL-6 label. Official film released this week did not walk through that system firing. Treat APS fit as reported, not as demonstrated in this particular clip.

Numbers remain small. Open tallies still put the 99B in the low tens of vehicles a year after the parade, against several hundred 99A tanks already in the force. The factory task is not to replace the 99A overnight. It is to prove the new turret and electronics on a few brigades, then decide how many 99A hulls are worth rebuilding.

3. Why a Live-Fire Tape Matters More Than the Parade

A parade proves the plant can finish a hull to a paint standard and drive it in column. A live-fire serial proves:

  • ammunition of the declared type is in the unit bunker, not only in a demonstration load;
  • the autoloader and sights survive repeated firing;
  • instructors have a syllabus for standing, moving and off-axis shots;
  • the vehicle is assigned to an armored formation, not only to a display regiment.

Song Zhongping, speaking to the Global Times after the broadcast, said the tape showed the 99B had entered service with tank units and could already fight in more than one geometry. That is the ceiling of what the official pictures support. They do not support a fleet-wide conversion date or a published rate of fire.

4. Markers Worth Watching

  1. Whether later tapes show the active-protection system actually launching an interceptor, not only the radar panels on the turret.
  2. Whether 99B vehicles appear in more than one group army, or stay concentrated in the unit that supplied the parade detachment.
  3. Whether Norinco language shifts from “new model in training” to a rebuild program for existing 99A brigades.

The 99B is still a Type 99: same gun family, same crew size, same plant. The 2026 footage is how you tell that the upgrade has left the square and entered the ammunition cycle. Until more hulls show up, it is a qualified production tank, not a new generation of armor by itself.
