According to China’s official military WeChat account “Xuexi Juntuan”, the Chinese frontier defense troops in the Tibetan Plateau recently realized uninterrupted water supply under the conditions of high altitude, poor water area, and deep-frozen soil.

It’s reported that the Chinese army has successfully organized a pilot project for digging wells in the permafrost areas of the plateau to obtain water. The officers and soldiers of the plateau border troops start to drink sweet well water.

“Over the years, in order to solve the problem of water supply security for troops in highland and cold areas, all levels have been trying to find ways to take measures such as pulling canal (spring) water, melting ice and snow to fetch water, sending up pure water, and installing water purification equipment to solve the problem of water difficulties for officers and soldiers. Since the beginning of this year, with a view to further improving the living conditions of officers and soldiers on the border, the Logistics Support Department of the Central Military Commission has selected some of the highland alpine border guard sites in the army to organize pilot wells for water in the highland alpine areas.”

“During the implementation process, the Logistics Support Department of the Central Military Commission, the Army, and the Xinjiang and Tibet Military Commands coordinated closely to conduct well-drilling tests, innovatively explored and adopted thermal insulation measures, and overcome the practical difficulties of difficult access to water sources, unstable water volume, and easy freezing of wells in plateau and alpine regions. They completed the construction of 3 wells with an altitude of 5000 meters and 10 border defense points at an altitude of 4000 meters. In particular, the use of tube wells with electric heating devices, special submersible pumps and gas injection disturbances, etc., effectively solve the freezing problems of permafrost tube wells and external water pipes.”

“The results of the pilot project of drilling wells in permafrost in the plateau and high-cold areas will be promoted and applied in-depth, in conjunction with traditional water supply guarantee methods, to provide border guard officers and soldiers with more durable, reliable, purer and safe-drinking water.”
