According to official PLA reporting, the 74th Group Army’s subordinate brigade has made measurable progress in strengthening unmanned combat capabilities, particularly by equipping traditional engineer units with intelligent unmanned platforms. This effort reflects the broader PLA emphasis on reducing human exposure in high-risk forward tasks while maintaining operational tempo.

During an early summer training demonstration, the brigade simulated a scenario in which enemy artillery had damaged a key road. An operator safely positioned in a rear area, identified as Yang Shengwei, deployed a unmanned excavator to rapidly repair the route. The machine performed precise sequences of excavation, soil dumping, leveling, and compaction. Yang noted that such tasks previously placed engineer troops — historically the “pathfinders” — directly in the line of enemy fire. The introduction of unmanned excavators now enables zero-casualty execution of these missions.

This development aligns with PLA doctrine on intelligentized warfare, where unmanned ground systems serve as force multipliers for engineer units. By keeping personnel out of direct engagement zones, the brigade addresses a long-standing vulnerability in contested environments, particularly relevant for potential high-intensity operations across the Taiwan Strait or border regions where engineer support is critical for mobility.

Addressing Skepticism and Building Institutional Support

Last year, as the brigade prepared for major exercises, its leadership conducted a systematic review of capability gaps. They directed subordinate battalions and companies to form specialized research teams focused on unmanned systems integration. Initial resistance emerged among some personnel, who questioned the precision of large unmanned platforms and worried about the long-term implications for traditional roles and career progression.

As reported by authorized mainland channels, the brigade’s Party committee addressed these concerns directly in dedicated discussions. The resulting approach included:

  • Developing a targeted list of unmanned equipment training tasks tied to real combat requirements.
  • Encouraging qualified personnel to “reveal the list and take the lead” on technical challenges.
  • Organizing mass-level training competitions to build familiarity with new systems.
  • Sending key cadres and backbone personnel to equipment manufacturers and peer units to absorb best practices.

These measures appear designed to accelerate the transition from concept to combat effectiveness while maintaining unit cohesion. For regional defense watchers, this bottom-up feedback loop combined with top-down direction mirrors successful PLA modernization patterns seen in other domains.

Technical Familiarization and Human Talent Focus

Inside one battalion’s unmanned combat workshop, personnel have conducted repeated disassembly and reassembly of systems while studying anti-unmanned countermeasures. This “spear and shield” analysis has reportedly helped refine both offensive and defensive tactics. Brigade leadership emphasized that while platforms operate without onboard crews, skilled human operators remain the decisive factor.

A notable personnel example is Corporal Zhang Yang. Originally assigned to a bridge unit despite his interest in aviation, he volunteered for the brigade’s drone operator training program and earned professional certification. His experience highlights the PLA’s effort to retain motivated personnel by aligning individual skills with emerging capabilities.

The brigade is actively expanding its pool of qualified drone operators to create a more systematic and standardized unmanned force structure. Demonstrations also featured unmanned vehicles conducting precise mine-clearing operations and drones providing aerial support.

Strategic Implications for Engineer Modernization

This operational marker hints at the PLA Ground Force’s continued shift toward multi-domain, unmanned-augmented engineer support. Traditional sapper roles — breaching, route clearance, and obstacle reduction — are receiving “intelligent wings” through remote and autonomous systems. This not only preserves experienced personnel but also enables sustained operations under conditions of intense enemy surveillance and precision fires.

The 74th Group Army, part of the Southern Theater Command, operates in a strategically sensitive region critical for southern amphibious and Taiwan Strait contingencies. Enhancing engineer survivability and speed through unmanned systems carries clear implications for rapid deployment and sustainment scenarios. While current demonstrations focus on relatively mature platforms like unmanned excavators and basic drones, the methodical approach to talent development and technical familiarization suggests a foundation for more complex manned-unmanned teaming in future exercises.

Brigade leaders stated they will continue prioritizing battlefield demands to further develop new-domain and new-quality combat forces.
